Where Digital Fighters Meet Real-World Breakers
An immersive opening ceremony where iconic fighters challenge world-class breakers.
The Brief
As part of a three-month paid discovery programme, Red Bull challenged us to explore how the world of Street Fighter could be brought into the BC One World Final in Tokyo.
Set within the legendary Ryōgoku Kokugikan sumo arena, the ambition was to create an opening ceremony where digital fighters and world-class breakers could appear to perform side-by-side in front of a live audience.
Creative Response
Our concept centred on the idea of a Street Fighter hijack.
Rather than presenting the game as a branded backdrop to the competition, we imagined the Street Fighter universe breaking into the event itself, taking over the arena and challenging the world's best breakers to battle. Characters emerged from the digital world, interrupted the ceremony and transformed the competition into a full-scale arena spectacle.
To sell the illusion, we looked beyond a single holographic moment. Projection, lighting, staging, animation and live performance were designed to work together as one cohesive experience, turning the entire venue into a stage where the physical and digital worlds appeared to collide.
Developing the Experience
Over a three-month discovery phase, we worked with specialists across projection mapping, holographic display systems, live event production and rigging to test whether the concept could be realised at arena scale.
The process combined creative development with technical R&D, exploring everything from hologauze installations and character animation to sightlines, staging and performer interaction.
Rather than assuming the illusion would work, each element was developed and tested to understand how digital Street Fighter characters could convincingly appear alongside live breakers within the unique environment of the Ryogoku Kokugikan.
The result was a fully developed and technically validated concept, demonstrating that the experience was achievable. While the project ultimately did not proceed into production, the three-month discovery phase successfully proved the creative and technical feasibility of bringing the Street Fighter universe into a live competitive arena environment.
