Into the Majlis al Jinn
Capturing one of the world's largest cave chambers to create a monumental projection-mapped experience for Oman's new national museum.
The Challenge
Commissioned as part of the new Oman Across Ages Museum, this permanent installation introduces visitors to Majlis al Jinn, the second-largest known cave chamber in the world.
The ambition was not simply to document the cave, but to transform an almost inaccessible natural wonder into a cinematic, architectural experience that could convey its immense scale, atmosphere and geological beauty.
My Approach
The first creative decision was to ask what would best communicate the experience of standing inside Majlis al Jinn. While technologies such as LiDAR scanning and CGI reconstruction were considered, I felt the cave's immense scale, texture and atmosphere could only truly be conveyed by capturing the real environment.
Working with specialist drone operators and high-resolution cinema cameras, we filmed deep within the cave, using cinematic composition, movement and natural light to reveal its vastness.
The resulting footage became the foundation for a large-scale projection-mapped installation, allowing visitors to experience the space with a level of authenticity that only live-action cinematography could provide.
Outcome
The final experience was designed specifically for a 270° projection-mapped environment. From the way the cave was filmed to the rhythm of the edit, every creative decision considered how the content would wrap seamlessly around the visitor, creating a genuine sense of scale and immersion.
By combining cinematic capture with architectural projection mapping, the installation transforms the gallery into an experience of Majlis al Jinn itself, allowing visitors to feel the magnitude of a place few people will ever have the opportunity to enter.
